That time of the year has begun, new babies making their appearance into this cold, wet world. Our beautiful mares were working hard to care for their new charges, and give them all the loving care they possibly could. The vet had been out numerous times already with some of the mares. A couple of our maiden mares whom we thought would have difficulties during birth had absolutely zero problems which was a major relief. The grooms were running around the barns like maniacs, bringing blankets, clean towels, warm water, iodine and various other things we or the vet needed. You'd think we were running a full scale hospital in here or something; don't mind the hay! I had been helping the vet with one of our older mares who ended up having her baby prematurely. We were sceptical whether the poor little girl would survive, but with every passing day the little squirt got stronger and stronger with the tender loving care of her dam and the staff. Everyone was rooting for her and would stop by to check on her every chance they got.
The horses in the show barn were getting particularly rowdy with the expectations of performing in upcoming shows! Plus all the excitement in the breeding barn didn't help matters much. The show horses were getting jealous so Becka and I went to give them some attention so they wouldn't feel so left out. Our beautiful mare CU Shining Eldorado was on leave from the show string so her newest foal could be born. Breeding her to our fancy boy Hollywood Night Chex W was a no brainer as their beautiful new daughter; CU Shining Night, is sure to be a super star in the show ring! She is an absolutely adorable little red dun with plenty of spunk and spark! Niva's full brother; who was produced via embryo transfer and implanted in our beautiful girl, Peps Fine Shiner or Pepsi, was another fantastic baby. He was born a couple days before Niva, and he's another favorite of the barn. Known as CU Nu Shining Gun or Nova, this gorgeous bay dun firecracker will be another fantastic addition to our show string! I have a feeling he's going to be one heck of a sire when his time comes as well, he just has that look about him! Yeah I'm jumping the gun a bit, hehe, I can't help it. His daddy needs some more awesome babies on the ground, he doesn't have near enough!!
Once we had taken care of the show horses, Becka and I wandered back to the breeding barn. We discussed the coming months when the babies would grow up and start their halter and leading training, and getting to know humans and experiencing different situations, noises and desensitizing to various things. We couldn't wait to start their preliminary training, loading in the trailer, grooming, farrier work, etc. We had a lot of work ahead of us and many foals to work with. I couldn't believe how many great horses we had in our possession, and the future was arriving before our very eyes almost every day!! This summer was sure to be an action packed one with all these babies, weaning was going to be tough on them but necessary for their future careers as Working Western horses! Stay tuned for our foal crop that's arriving!
