"Oh my gosh will this snow ever end?!" Becka said angrily.
Not that I could blame her, I was getting pretty sick and tired of this awful weather we keep having. Here it's nearing the month of March and still snowing and raining and then snowing again!
"Weather forecast says snow off and on all week along with rain here and there." JT said coming around the corner with a couple hay nets he had just filled in the feed room.
Becka started cussing at the weather, JT and I started cracking up laughing as Alicia pulled up behind us with a full wheelbarrow of manure. "Um how exactly am I supposed to get to the manure pile in this?" She asked, pointing out the doorway at the snow piling up.
"Piece of cake, here I'll show you after I get these hung up." JT said and headed down the barn aisle to hang up the hay nets and then helped Alicia unload her wheelbarrow. Darren was out sick with the flu, so JT had taken over for the time being. We had recently hired a couple new grooms for Bavenwood as well, so we didn't have anything to worry about.
I proceeded to venture into the barn office to check our phone messages when Becka walked through the door.
"Sorry." She said sheepishly, "It's just we're all so done with this weather and it never seems to stop."
"I can definitely agree with you there, this state is as bipolar as they come!" I said, making Becka laugh.
"You can say that again! Even the horses are restless and want to get outside, but no way in heck are they going out in that weather."
"They are all eager for spring just as much as we are." I patted Becka's shoulder, "Now lets finish cleaning stalls and get the door closed so we don't have any horsecicles."
We both giggled and headed down the aisle to finish up our chores before heading in for lunch.
A few days later, the snow had subsided but then the rain came so the ground was a mess of mud and puddles. We decided to let some of the mares and foals out in the indoor arena for a little while and gave them some hay. We didn't want to risk any of them getting injured out in the soaked pastures. Becka offered to watch over them and soon Kelly came to join her and discuss some of the upcoming horses that would need to be worked for the coming show season. Becka was definitely liking the assistant trainer title, but she also offered to do barn chores as well so she could take care of the horses in the barns and ride the show horses with Kelly.
I decided to go check on our Morgan mares, I was pretty thrilled to take the step to get several Morgan Working Wesern horses, and had secured a couple Arabians at HF's annual Secret Santa gift exchange. The stallion was absolutely amazing; a stallion bred by Casper, which means a lot to me! Her horses have always been some of my favorites.
"Hello my beautiful girls." I said, patting the noses of Treasure Of Rebels, Harvest Celebration BWF, Shimmer In Command BWF, and Twilight Dark Jewels RLF. Shady Sheriff, Yellow Flower, Amulet Of Mara BWF and Seacoast Silver Dollar were snoozing in their stalls. These girls were still expecting foals and were due any time. I hated to have them cooped up in their stalls, but didn't want them delivering their foals in the arena dirt. They would just have to wait awhile longer.
I then headed to the mid section of the barn where our Morgan stallions were kept; Cowboys Talisman BWF and Bywinds Vibrant. Vibrant had actually come to use as a Western Pleasure stallion, but we had the inkling of an idea that he might be able to produce Working Western foals. He was then moved in the stall across from Cowboy so we didn't have any fights. But these two boys actually get along very well which is how it should be!!
After checking the Morgan Cowhorses, I walked to the very end of the barn where my two Arabians were housed, they were both dozing in the back of their stalls, so I left them be. I closed the front door behind me as quiet as I could and headed over to the Stock Horse barn where the Show Stock were housed; the breeding horses had their own barn which left plenty of stalls for new show horses! We have quite a few competitors in all phases of Working Western!! We even have a mare trained and competing in Western Dressage and a Barrel Racer!
