Summer is definitely in full swing around here, temps in the 90s, sweaty horses working under the covered arena, flies and dust flying everywhere, dirty and thirsty riders and barn hands racing around trying to find shade to sit and relax in between riding, stall cleaning, feeding, and all the normal barn chores. I finally got the time to get in a couple of rides myself between heat waves. The temps have been steadily rising from the 80s to the 90s with little relief in sight. No rain, no storms, just hot! We decided to let the horses out at night with a generous amount of fly spray to keep the mosquitos at bay while this hot weather continues. I really don't like the idea of the horses scorching themselves in the sun, yikes no thanks!! Their comfy in their stalls with the stall fans going, hay nets full and cool water to drink. We just got another load of orchard grass and alfalfa in from Eastern Washington. We decided to get an extra large load this time to kind of prepare for the colder months ahead. I already have another load on order in another month or more, we just have to see how this loads holds out. With all the mouths to feed, it doesn't take long to use up what we have stored away!
DT hit me up one morning before the sun started beating our brains to death with heat. He mentioned we should consider downsizing some of the herd we're not really actively showing or racing. I can see his point, why house horses that no longer fit into our program when we have so many others to care for. It would definitely help in the feed department I know that!! So we ended up putting some horses up for sale that sold pretty quickly which was a relief, we still have other horses to consider. We are already in need of more stall space, but by selling off some horses, that would make way for more homebred horses to stick around for training and showing. I'm anxious to get a lot more Bavenwood horses out into the world to represent our barn, but we need space to house some of those said horses. We are planning future breedings and have even thrown the thought around of building an additional barn on the grounds to house all youngsters from weanling to two years old until they are old enough to move to the Show Barn where they will finish out their training and begin their show careers. We already have a good variety of our own homebreds to choose from, but I'm always wanting to add more! Let some of the younger generations prove themselves as producers I say, and also give the oldies more chances for prove themselves before their breeding days are over. There are several horses I'm dying to get babies out of; namely a few of our racers, but they can't be racers and breeders at the same time! So I will wait patiently until their racing careers are over to start planning mates and such.
On a side note, there has been some talk around the barn of expanding out Morgan Working Western herd. We have so few horses, adding new faces could only help our odds of promoting the Working Western Morgan better to others in the same disciplines! We have a huge herd of Quarter Horses, who says I can't have a huge herd of Morgans too!! Our Morgans numbers have been steadily growing over the past few years. Not as many as I would have liked, but we're growing slow but sure!! I'm also anxious to get some more Pleasure and Saddleseat Morgans bred, some of our oldies will be retiring from the breeding shed soon, and they need more babies!! I can't wait to see the new foals faces and get the opportunity to help train and show the beauties! Stay tuned for more future Morgan babies!!
As for the rest of the crew, the Thorgans are excelling as are the Thoroughbreds. The Mini's are doing well, and the AWB's are rocking the Sport Horse World!! We have a couple up and coming babies we will be unveiling soon. Their training has been going exceptionally well and we're anxious to get them out and about before the years end. Hopefully we can get some points on them in the coming months and perhaps even a title or two before the end of the show season!! The Morgans and Working Western horses are all having a fantastic year so far. The Hanoverians are kicking tail in Dressage and Eventing, we're debating whether to lower numbers in this breed. We're still considering it, no firm decisions yet. As for the rest of the crew, we'll see what happens. We've been doing a lot of serious thinking of some serious changes that need to happen soon. We'll keep you updated on what happens and if any decisions are reached.
