Hello Spring, where the breeding and foaling madness begins!! It's always a super busy time around the farm; like any farm when breeding and foaling time hit you smack in the face! Mares are dropping foals right and left, a million phone calls coming in requesting breedings to our boys, and last but not least the insanity of the Stallion and Breeding Barn activities. It's enough to knock you on your butt and trample you if your not careful!! Thank goodness for voice-mail, email and text messages!! I can then make an appearance in the barn and find a few moments to ride or train or groom a horse without being stuck on the phone all day every day, what a drag!! I personally hate making millions of phone calls, ugh, I would much rather use my computer and phone skills to send messages. I will make phone calls if I absolutely have to, but in this day and age of technology and computers you shouldn't have to really. At least that's my opinion, otherwise I'll get tongue tied and forget what I was going to say or can't come up with the words I need to make a sentence, lol.
One day as I was heading to the barn my phone rang and I made the mistake of not looking at the caller idea and got stuck on the phone with a babbling idiot I couldn't hardly understand who kept running over the top of me whenever I tried to say anything. So finally I got pissed and told him to screw himself very loudly in the phone and hung up on him. I can not stand solicitors!! And I get enough of those on a daily basis it seems ugh.
The mares barn was in one heck of a mess one morning. Two of the mares were foaling at the same time and the grooms were running around like chickens without heads. Trying my hardest not to laugh out loud, my girls and I pitched in to help with the clean up. Then my youngest Evette got on the phone and called the vet who luckily was right over in the Breeding Barn. She said she would be over in a bit as she was helping JT and the stallion manager with collecting the boys. Yup, today was collection day which I was happy for because some of our boys were getting up there in age and I wanted the option to have breedings available from them should they pass due to their advancing age. I was always trying to think ahead like that. I still had eggs carefully frozen from a couple of my older girls who had passed over the Rainbow Bridge years ago. One day when I found the perfect stallion to accommodate them I would use the eggs in surrogate mares and have me some more babies!! I tried very hard to get at least 5 foals by each mare if I could manage it and at least 8-10 foals per stallion. But sometimes that fluctuated depending on the individual horse. Some of my more highly prized horses could have up to 10 foals per mare or 20 foals per stallion. This year I hadn't planned very many foals, but that could change if we needed more horses in a particular discipline. This year seems more geared for the Flat Racing, CDE and Eventing competitions with Reining coming in 3rd. We didn't have a large list of Dressage, Hunter or other Working Western competitors and our herd has slowly been converting more to the bigger Racing, CDE, Eventing and Reining events as of late which doesn't bother anyone here. We know we have strong horses who can compete with the big boys and girls in the ring and on the track. Our Thoroughbred her has grown exponentially the past couple years which is very impressive!! We even got one of our old trainers back; Mike Tager. After we dispersed the majority of our TB herd a few years back, Mike got into Harness Racing after having a bit of bad luck in TB Racing. But after he heard we were back in the game and after another bout of bad luck with not so great racers who weren't winning due to different factors, he called me up. He was ready to try his hand in TB Racing again and with him working with our newest trainer Stephanie Bower, they have become an unstoppable team and our horses are doing well!! This year we may not have a Derby hopeful, but we do have 2 Derby Oaks hopefuls in Dazzling Dreamer BWF and Decoded Dancer BWF. Both girls have been doing well, but we still have a little over a month to go before the big day!! We have also added quite a few very nice Turf racers to our small Turf Racing string! I'm excited about them all!! And on our Dirt side we have the fabulous Black Pearl BWF who has been one of our best dirt girls the last couple years, and will likely be pointing towards the Breeder's Cup Distaff this Fall!! Keep an eye out for that powerhouse girl!! She'll definitely make an impression on you!!
As foe the other portions of the farm, the CU horses are doing fantastic. We have a few newbies to the Reining string and some of the oldsters may be retiring to the breeding shed soon. We want to sli down our competition string for the time being while our Sporthorses try to make a name for themselves. Our TB Sporties are doing fantastic and we can only hope they continue improving as we want a nice herd of Sport TBs!! Our boys Emporer Scorpion SE, FC Incubus Dream, and PYR Midnight Code have been producing some super nice Sport and Race foals for us! I'm pretty excited about those guys and can't wait to see how their foals continue to develop!! Scorp's son Mysterious Scorpion BWF who is owned by Zym of Eagle Mountains has been kicking some carts in CDE competition. We are especially proud of him and so happy he is doing so well for Zym. I have a feeling he will no doubt be an exceptional sire when his time comes!! Our boys also have other foals out and about in HF Land and I'm sure they will do equally as well for their owners!! As for the girls, our very talented Eventing mare MYS Dark Radiance; whom we acquired from the exceptional Sunny of Mystic Vision, is still successfully competing in Advanced level and CCI**** Eventing. And now we have 2 of her exceptional foals to carry on her winning ways!! The gorgeous Radiant Scorpion BWF is currently competing in Combined Driving, while her maternal half sister Radiant Dreams BWF is following in mama and daddy's hoofprints in Eventing!! We can't wait to start tallying up show points and wish these girls well on their showing journeys!! It's going to be a thrilling adventure that's for sure!! We can't wait to see what all they can do in the future!! Keep an eye on these two gems!!
And finally to round out our post, Zym and I have designed a new horse breed which will tear the Combined Driving world apart!! We have begun the careful development of a cross breed that will be unlike any other! We call it the Thorgan! A Sporthorse of Thoroughbred and Morgan origin, bred to dominate the Combined Driving world with its athleticism, good looks and steady manner. This breeds foundation lies with Zym's outstanding stallion DonoftheNorth E who is an exceptional example of his breeding and has won many times!! He is our mascot or spokes horse for the breed and will show the HF world for years just how great this cross really is! After the breeds development, we found out these horses could not only conquer the Combined Driving world, but could definitely do some serious damage in Dressage, low level Eventing and possibly even Hunters! The Thorgan I'd an amazing crossing, and I'm very proud and elated be a part of it with Zym. We have been planning for years to design our own Sporthorse, and the Thorgan is a breed beyond our wildest dreams!! Keep an eye out for more Thorgans hitting the CDE scene very soon!! We have a few foals by our own Bavenwood Crusader who will be hitting the ring soon, and we're VERY excited about them!!
