A beautiful day leads to another exciting Committee Adventure! Being this is a new month, we get 5 new horses if we can find them. JT hitched up the truck and trailer while the other grooms tended to the horses for morning feeding and stall mucking. We prepared to load into the truck when the phone rang. Seems one of the breeding grooms was in hysterics over one of the stallions spraining their hoof earlier that morning when they let him out into his pasture. The stallion; Seattle Bey, was somewhat of a cluts at times, he always seemed to get into trouble especially when Spring was on its way. He was one of those anxious ones who wanted girlfriends right now, but he would have to wait! I advised Tracy; the breeding groom, to call the vet and told her we would be back later. Hopefully she gets the job done, she's one of the newer grooms and I really feel she has a lot to learn but the older grooms and breeding manager will definitely be her go to for help!
We were finally on the road when the phone rang again. I groaned when I noticed it was from the breeding barn again. Tracy called to inform me the vet would be out shortly and she would keep me posted. I told her it was going to be alright and that these things happen. She was definitely a little strung out especially when it came to horses getting injured, but she would learn....hopefully!! At least the drive to the Committee grounds was nice enough, warm sunshine beat through the windshield to roast us all the way until we found the ideal parking spot near the end of the paddocks. I was excited to see what we might be able to bring home. JT was hoping for more Thoroughbreds or Morgans for our Combined Driving team. I was hoping for Racers or prospective CDE or Eventers!
The grounds was filled with tons of horses this time, more than we had seen in a long time. We figured a couple farms must have went out of business or something, but when we realized which farms, we were a little sad, but also glad to be able to secure some of their outstanding horses for our own farm! Casper of Pelenor Fields had some amazing Working Western Stock Horses and Racing Thoroughbreds. We had been lucky enough to adopt a few of her Thoroughbreds and Quarter Horses! I had always admired her stables and their majestic, gorgeous horses!! This time around looked like Gulf Coast Thoroughbreds had thrown in the towel and there were a ton of their horses there. I pointed towards the sign that read Racing Stock and everyone meandered that way, google eyeing all the gorgeous horses and wondering which ones to choose! We located the Youngstock Pens and I ran through the horses stats listed on the stats sheet nailed to the pen gate. There were quite a few youngsters ready to start their racing career and some who were raceable now!
"What do you think?" JT asked as I finished scanning the stats sheet.
"There are a LOT of nice horses here today, oh my gosh, I think we hit the jackpot!!" I said excitedly taking a step back and surveying the paddock once more.
"We definitely did, its just too bad some of the great stables we knew had to give it up, but at least we can keep their bloodlines going." JT said excitedly
"Yeah, I'm sure the owners will be happy where these guys will be going!" I said, "Lets go check out that bay colt over there, Candy something?"
After about half an hour of haggling and debating and thinking, we finally decided on a lot of 5 Thoroughbreds all 3yos! Candy Empire, Steel My Heart GC, Interrogate, Alexis Rose GC, and Maggie Mo. I needed to do some research to see if they had been raced before, but if not they had at least had their training completed hopefully and would be on their way to the track in no time. But they all at least had some pretty stellar bloodlines and would not only be great Racehorses but would also make valuable Breeding or Sport stock for the future! Once the paperwork end was all settled, we loaded the horses and were back on the road again. The horses shifted around in the trailer as we maneuvered the streets until finally making it to the freeway and headed in the direction of home.
Once there the show barn grooms raced out of the barn like their tail feathers were on fire to see what horses we had brought home. JT with his big smile gave us away when the grooms asked if we had found anything.
"What do you think?" JT laughed, pointing towards the trailer as one of the horses let out a shrill whinny.
"We're fully loaded with 5 horses, lets get them out and settled, make sure the stalls have hay and water please Harry and Ben!!" I told two of the new grooms as the rest of us started unloading the horses. JT and the others led the horses into the barn and they were soon settled in. Tomorrow would determine their level of training and racing ability!!
